Scientific Name:
Gasteropelecus levis (Eigenmann, 1909)
Range:
South America: lakes, swamps, and ponds overgrown with dense vegetation in the Lower Amazon basin, Brazil.
Maximum size:
8-9cm. (3-3,5").
Aquarium:
Like its relatives, this larger Hatchetfish-species inhabits the upper layers of the aquarium, just below the surface. It will jump out of the water when threatened or startled, so a tight-fitting lit is required to keep these fish where they belong: in the water. A tank with dimmed lights and a good amount of plants makes this fish feel more secure. The water should be soft and slightly acidic to neutral, with a fair amount of oxygenation and little to no currents.
Given its relatively large size as adults, a medium-sized tank is required for a group of these fish: a 32" (80cm.) long tank is the minimum to house 6-8 of these remarkable fish.

Diet:
Flakes, blood worms, mosquito larvae and other small live foods. This fish usually eats from the surface, but will also swim down to eat.
Temperament:
Peaceful community fish, but spooked easily, so tank mates should be chosen with care: avoid overly active, inquisitive or dominant fish.
